Should You Follow That User on Twitter?

Andrew Wee has posted a great article on how should you measure your social network in 2009.

After reading the article, I came away wondering just how good a job had I done in following “quality” Twitter users. In many ways this is a personal value judgment, but if you really want to make sure that you are managing your social network you need to set some ground rules for yourself.

So here is the the critiera that I used in my own personal evaluation:

• Does this appear to be a real person or is it an automaton?
• Does this user appear to have similar interests to myself?
• Does this user seem to actually contribute to the dialog?
• Does the user seem to only want to sell me something?
• If I was not following this person on Twitter would I follow their RSS feed?

Well after setting that criteria, I did some digging into the users that I follow. It seems that I have not always had the same standards. However, it appears that it is nowhere as bad as I thought it could be.

So have you spent the time lately to go through your twitter account and audit the users that you follow? You might want to take the time today and do a little trimming.
